Herding is a dog sport that showcases a dog’s instinctive ability to control the movement of livestock such as sheep, cattle, or ducks. Originally developed for working farm dogs, herding trials now test a dog’s obedience, responsiveness, and natural drive in a controlled environment. Handlers give commands while dogs guide the animals through various obstacles and pens. It requires excellent focus, teamwork, and precise movement from both dog and handler.
Schutzhund/IPO/PSA
Schutzhund, now officially known as IGP, is a rigorous dog sport that evaluates a dog’s tracking, obedience, and protection skills. Originally developed in Germany to test German Shepherd Dogs, it requires a balanced temperament, control, and discipline. Dogs must complete tasks like tracking scents, following complex obedience routines, and apprehending a decoy in the protection phase. This sport is highly demanding and is often used to evaluate dogs for police, military, and breeding suitability.

Rally and traditional obedience are sports focused on precision, teamwork, and communication between handler and dog. In rally, the dog and handler move through a course with signs indicating specific obedience tasks, such as sits, turns, or stays. Traditional obedience tests include exercises like heeling, recalls, and retrieving, often judged on accuracy and attitude. Both forms emphasize the dog’s attentiveness, reliability, and willingness to work under direction.
search and rescue
Search and Rescue (SAR) is not only a sport but also a real-world application where trained dogs help locate missing persons. These dogs are trained to detect human scent in a variety of terrains and conditions, including wilderness, urban, and disaster sites. SAR trials and training test the dog’s tracking, air-scenting, obedience, and ability to work independently yet stay connected with the handler. Dogs in SAR must be highly motivated, calm under pressure, and exceptionally well-trained.
dock diving
Dock diving is a water-based sport where dogs leap from a dock into a pool or body of water, aiming to achieve maximum distance or height. The dog runs down the dock and jumps after a toy, often cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd. Events may include distance jumping, vertical jumping, or timed retrievals. It’s a fun, high-energy sport that’s perfect for athletic, water-loving dogs of all sizes.

lure coursing
Lure coursing is a fast-paced sport designed primarily for sighthounds, where dogs chase a mechanically operated lure across a field. The course mimics the unpredictability of prey, with twists and turns to challenge the dog’s speed, agility, and prey drive. It allows dogs to demonstrate natural hunting instincts in a safe and structured environment. Non-sighthounds can also participate in similar versions known as "fast CAT" or modified lure events.

Agility
Agility is a dynamic sport where dogs navigate an obstacle course that includes jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and more. The handler directs the dog through the course using verbal cues and body language, aiming for speed and accuracy. It requires excellent coordination, communication, and athleticism from both dog and handler. Agility is popular with many breeds and is celebrated for its energy, excitement, and the strong bond it builds between dog and owner.
